Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has urged the team ahead of tonight’s crucial World Cup qualifier against the Benin Republic to “win the game” as a perfect birthday present for him.

The Super Eagles face the Cheetahs at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo p.m. tonight, knowing that only a victory will give them a fighting chance to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Eric Chelle’s men currently sit third in Group C with 14 points, trailing South Africa by one point and leaders Benin Republic by three.

Musa, who turned 32 today, sent his good wishes and rallying call through a video posted on the Super Eagles’ official X handle.

“We all know what’s at stake, win the game and wait for the other result. I know you can do it. This would be the best birthday gift for me, guys. I miss you all and wish you the best of luck. I know we can do it, let’s do it again today,” Musa said.

Naija News reports that the Super Eagles’ qualification chances hang by a thread after a shaky campaign that has seen the team struggle for consistency. Nigeria must beat the Benin Republic and hope that South Africa fail to defeat Rwanda to secure a ticket to North America.

Anything short of victory tonight would certainly see Nigeria miss back-to-back World Cups for the first time since making their debut in 1994.

For the Benin Republic, the stakes are equally high. Gernot Rohr’s side, sitting on 17 points, could qualify for their first-ever World Cup with a win in Uyo. Even a draw might be enough if South Africa drops points.
