Danny Rohl has officially pulled out of the running to become Rangers’ next head coach.
The 36-year-old German, who impressed during his time at Sheffield Wednesday, is the second candidate to withdraw from the process in less than a week following Steven Gerrard’s decision to reject a return to Ibrox.
Rohl had been viewed as one of the leading contenders to replace Russell Martin, who was dismissed earlier this month. However, it’s understood he has now informed the club that he no longer wishes to be considered for the position.
Former Rangers player Kevin Muscat remains among the frontrunners, though any move may take time. Muscat is currently in charge of Shanghai Port in China, whose season does not conclude until late November, with four matches still to play.
Despite Rohl’s withdrawal, club insiders suggest Rangers are still speaking with multiple potential candidates as the search continues.
Rohl reportedly held constructive discussions with the Scottish Premiership side, but the club’s deliberate and methodical approach to appointing a new head coach has seen him step away from the process.
The young German’s coaching resume includes stints with RB Leipzig, Southampton, and Bayern Munich, as well as serving as assistant coach for the German national team.
He took charge of Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, becoming the youngest manager in the English Football League.
Rohl guided the Owls to safety before leading them to a mid-table finish in 12th place the following season, but departed during the summer amid financial uncertainty and ownership issues at Hillsborough.
Russell Martin’s tenure at Ibrox lasted only 17 matches, leaving Rangers eighth in the table after one win in six. The club also suffered a heavy 9-1 aggregate loss to Club Brugge in Champions League qualifying and have endured defeats in both of their Europa League fixtures.
Rangers will look to steady their domestic campaign when they host Dundee United at Ibrox on Saturday.
