Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has vowed to give everything to help his country qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they prepare to face Nigeria in the African playoffs semi-final on November 13.

The former Arsenal and FC Barcelona striker, who played a crucial role in Gabon’s campaign, helped the Panthers finish second in Group F behind Côte d’Ivoire to secure a playoff spot. Nigeria, meanwhile, booked their place after an emphatic 4-0 win over the Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday evening.

Speaking with The Standard, Aubameyang said he and his teammates are fully focused on earning Gabon’s first-ever World Cup ticket.

“We want to go to the World Cup and, to get there, we have to win games,” he said. “I’m very motivated, and when you have the chance to go to the World Cup, you have to be even more motivated.”

Naija News reports that the winner of the African playoffs will advance to the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026 in Mexico. Six teams from different continents (except Europe) will compete for the final two spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Aubameyang, who has been in fine form for Gabon, is expected to lead the attack against a confident Nigerian side boasting the likes of Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray and Ademola Lookman of Atalanta, the last two winners of the African Player of the Year award.
