For die-hard J.Crew fans, Wallace & Barnes has been something of an open secret for well over a decade. Since the vintage-inflected sub-label was introduced, its hardy, workwear-adjacent gear has hidden in plain sight on J.Crew's, well, site, nestled among the mainline staples its parent brand is beloved for. If you've scoured J.Crew's webstore before, you've likely come across it, a little more frontier than it is full-tenure. In recent seasons, though, the collection had dwindled a bit in anticipation of a broader brand revival. As of this week, that revival is here: Wallace & Barnes is back, and it is absolutely ripping.

The new iteration of the line narrows the scope of reference slightly, focusing on the stylistic hallmarks of '50s-era New York City—think weathered mil-spec classics mixed with leather moto jackets and chunky seafaring knits. The revamped W&B is a super-focused, eminently-wearable assortment of the heirloom-grade pieces you might’ve encountered in a dusty vintage store close to a decade ago when nobody was looking for them—minus any of the issues that tend to plague, say, a pair of chinos made in the 1940s. (There are many, for those wondering.)

Because this is still J.Crew we're talking about, the revamped collection is refined enough for the office, durable enough to last until retirement, and as blissfully immune to trends as the source material was. Is looking like Kerouac circa 1953 as simple as picking a palatable shipping option? Probably not, but there are few better ways to facilitate that goal than the new-and-improved Wallace & Barnes. Check out what we're feeling below, or head over to J.Crew to see it all for yourself.

47 1950s New York Yankees Cap

Just know that if you're reading this sentence, I am currently wearing this pitch-perfect short-brimmed Yankees joint.

    Duck Canvas Utility Jacket

All those lovingly-worn barn coats you see at vintage stores started somewhere, and there's a great chance that somewhere was nearly identical to this one.

    Wool Cable-Knit Sweater

There's presumably a way to make yourself cold while wearing this sweater, but you would have to try laughably hard.

    Japanese Selvedge Chambray Workshirt

It's hard to overstate the kind of wardrobe weight a good chambray can bear, especially when it's already broken in a bit and comes with funky mismatched pockets.

    Selvedge Officer Chino Pant

Made with the same kind of sturdy selvedge cotton twill you'd find on the 100-year-old originals.

  • 6/17

    Wallace & Barnes

    Wool-Blend Western Peacoat

Sure, this peacoat is just easy to wear as its plain-Jane counterparts, but the plaid pattern and subtle western details will keep you coming back to it long after any ho-hum versions lose their appeal.

    Honeycomb Thermal Crewneck

When a thermal looks like this one does on its own, feel free to lean on it early and often right now.

    Flannel Workshirt

A beast of a flannel that wears like a couch blanket.

Limited-Edition Schott NYC Retro Moto Jacket

If you get yourself one (1) good moto jacket, it'll be the last one you ever have to buy—and this might be one of the best you cand find anywhere. (If you ending up adding more to the collection, that's on you.)

    Wallace & Barnes

    Heritage Fleece Pullover Hoodie

Hoodies didn't always have kangaroo pockets. The old ones used to come with welted hand-warmers like these, which both live up to their mandate and also hold your stuff far better than their counterparts.

    Wallace & Barnes

    Heritage Fleece Sweatshirt

Pro tip: If you see this crewneck and don't immediately think "I should go grab mine," you need a better crewneck (probably this one, in fact).

    Italian Leather Belt

On a cost-per-wear basis, this belt will come in under a penny when you finally hang it up.

    Relaxed Denim Trouser

Despite evidence to the contrary, these aren't technically "jeans"—they're detailed and proportioned just like a pair of trousers. Because they're made from rinsed denim, though, they're just as easy to style, and a lot easier to dress up than a pedestrian pair of 5-pockets.

    Limited-Edition Suede Work Jacket

Should you be doing anything arduous in this work jacket? Inadvisable. What is advisable is making this timeless showstopper the centerpiece of your outerwear rotation.
