A Humboldt Park man accused of shooting his 18-year-old daughter and firing at her girlfriend because he was displeased with their same-sex relationship is in custody after officials tracked him down near Orlando, Florida.

Prosecutors said the two women pulled over in the 2600 block of West Crystal on the evening of August 24 after discovering that both passenger-side tires on their SUV had been slashed. They called friends for help and waited for them to arrive. As they did, 59-year-old Jaime Santiago parked nearby and approached the women.

He allegedly began arguing with his daughter about her relationship with the 19-year-old woman who was with her. Santiago then unzipped a fanny pack strapped across his chest, pulled out a revolver, and aimed it at the girlfriend, prosecutors said in a detention filing. When his daughter stepped between them, Santiago shot her in the abdomen and then fired several rounds at the other woman as she ran away, according to prosecutors.

Video footage allegedly shows Santiago chasing after the fleeing woman and firing again. Both victims and multiple witnesses later identified him in photo lineups.

Santiago fled Chicago after the shooting and was later found in Kissimmee, Florida, where he was arrested.

He is charged with attempted first-degree murder and hate crime. Cook County Judge Deidre Dyer ordered him detained, calling him a threat to “any member of the LGBTQ community.”
