According to Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish, Marc Guehi has been offered a new contract as the Eagles sought to keep hold of their captain, but he has informed the club he would not be recommitting his future to them, and that he is ready for the next challenge in his career.

The 25-year-old will be out of contract at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen whether Palace receive a suitable offer for his services in January or he leaves as a free agent next summer. He was close to joining Liverpool on this summer’s Deadline Day, but the move fell through at the eleventh hour as Palace withdrew the consent they had previously given.

Liverpool reportedly remain interested, facing a similar problem with Ibrahima Konate, but Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are believed to have stepped into the race as well, so it will likely be down to the player himself to choose his destination when he leaves Selhurst Park.

“I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year,” Glasner said.

“The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, ‘no, I want to make something different’. And that’s normal.

“And for us, it’s how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that’s all about how we are talking together.”
