The official trailer for Primate has finally been released, giving horror fans their first real look at the upcoming film from director Johannes Roberts. The movie is a horror story that stars Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, and Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur.
Primate first made its debut at Fantastic Fest on September 18, where it earned mostly positive reactions from critics.
It’s now set to hit theaters on January 9, 2026, with Paramount Pictures handling the release. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds an 88% approval rating from 17 critics, which suggests audiences might be in for a solid horror experience.

The rest of the cast includes Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, Charlie Mann, Tienne Simon, Miguel Torres Umba, Kae Alexander, Amina Abdi, and Albert Magashi.
The project came together in mid-2024 when Paramount Pictures gave the green light. Johannes Roberts, known for his work on 47 Meters Down and The Strangers: Prey at Night, co-wrote the script with Ernest Riera.
Producer Walter Hamada joined through his first-look deal with Paramount, and Troy Kotsur was among the first to sign on. Roberts later confirmed that filming started in September 2024 and wrapped that November, sharing updates on his Instagram.
Now that the trailer has arrived, fans can finally get a feel for the atmosphere Roberts has crafted. It’s dark, tense, and full of mystery, exactly what you’d expect from one of his horror films. With the buzz from Fantastic Fest and early reviews leaning positive, Primate might be one of the first big horror hits of 2026.
