The lawmaker representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was formally announced on Tuesday during plenary after a letter he addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio was read on the floor.

In the letter, Sumaila explained that the prolonged crisis within the PDP is the reason he has decided to jump ship

Samaila, lamented that leadership issues and factional disputes had weakened the PDP’s structure in his state and across the country.

With his exit, PDP’s representation in the 10th Senate has dropped from 28 to 27 members, while the APC now holds 74 seats.

The defection further strengthens the ruling party’s majority in the Senate, leaving the Labour Party with four senators, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, with two, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and the Social Democratic Party, SDP, with one senator each.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Naija News reports that Mbah announced the decision on Tuesday during a press conference in Enugu, saying it was driven by his desire to better serve the people of the state and align with the APC’s development vision.

Addressing journalists, the governor said his new political path was chosen after careful reflection

Mbah stated, “Leadership demands difficult, even painful decisions, in the service of higher principles and goals. And there comes always a time where everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny. Today, after a long reflection, we have made a decision to join the All Progressives Congress.”

The governor expressed gratitude to the PDP for offering him a platform during the last election, but insisted the switch was necessary to realise his administration’s goals.

He said, “To the Peoples Democratic Party which provided us the platform on which we campaigned and won, I extend deep gratitude. The PDP supported us through a demanding campaign and joined us in celebrating the victory.”

Mbah assured Enugu residents of his commitment to advancing the state’s interests, adding that the APC’s platform would open new opportunities for collaboration and growth.
