Netflix’s latest hit, KPop Demon Hunters, has officially crossed a huge milestone, logging over 500 million hours watched and more than 325 million total views, according to Tudum.
The film, which follows K-pop superstars-turned-demon hunters Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), now sits far ahead of previous top Netflix movies like Red Notice, which recorded 454 million hours viewed and 230 million total views since its 2021 release.
The success of KPop Demon Hunters has sparked early talks about expanding the story. Director Maggie Kang told Screen Rant that there’s potential for a sequel or side stories to explore unanswered questions and delve deeper into the characters’ backstories.
Chris Appelhans also told People that the film leaves “so many avenues that could be their own story.” Under a 2021 agreement, Sony has the rights to produce future installments, which are expected to go directly to Netflix.
Netflix is reportedly exploring multiple follow-up projects, including two sequels, a television series, a short film, and even a stage musical.
Netflix Films chairman Dan Lin said in a statement to Newsweek, “[KPop Demon Hunters’] success comes from its original, fresh story so if we do embark on a sequel, we would want to take our time to make sure that any future stories we tell with our favorite demon hunters retain the flair and uniqueness of the first film.”
Sony has also begun discussions with Kang and Appelhans about returning for the follow-up. As of late August, reports indicate that Netflix and Sony are in talks to develop an animated sequel, though details on timing and format are still being finalized.
KPop Demon Hunters has become a global phenomenon thanks to its unique mix of action, music, and fantasy, and the massive viewership numbers show that audiences are eager for more adventures.
Given the enthusiasm for the characters and the world they inhabit, it seems likely that Netflix and Sony will continue to build on this universe.
