The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, earlier scheduled for October 15 at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the decision was taken due to “recent developments” within the party.
“All NEC members should please note the postponement and be guided accordingly. A new date for the NEC will be communicated in due course,” Ologunagba announced.
The NEC remains the highest decision-making body of the PDP, comprising state governors, serving and former presidents, former vice-presidents, the chairman and secretary of the Board of Trustees, principal officers of the National Assembly, state chairpersons, members of the NWC, former governors, and founding members.
The party is also preparing for its national convention on November 15, during which new members of the National Working Committee will be elected.
However, preparations for the convention have been complicated by legal challenges. Some members of the PDP, believed to be loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking to halt the exercise.
Last Thursday, Justice James Omotosho rejected their ex parte application but directed the plaintiffs to serve all defendants with their motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction. The case has been adjourned to October 14 for hearing.
The postponement comes at a time when the opposition party is grappling with a spate of defections. Several prominent members, including governors and lawmakers, have crossed over to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, formally joined the APC today, while Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, is also reportedly finalising plans to defect.
