An illegal immigrant from Sudan, Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam, 27, has been convicted after attempting to abduct a 17-year-old girl in Swindon, Wiltshire, but was stopped by quick-thinking bus passengers who intervened and saved the victim.
The shocking incident occurred around 9:30 p.m., as the teenager was walking home from work. CCTV footage showed Adam running toward her at a set of traffic lights, grabbing her from behind, and dragging her across the road “against her will.”
Fortunately, members of the public on a passing bus witnessed the attack, rushed to help, and managed to stop Adam before he could take the girl.
According to witnesses, after being thwarted, Adam attempted to approach two more women, one escaped, while he tried to follow another before fleeing the scene.
The victim’s mother reported the incident to police later that evening. Adam was arrested soon after and charged with attempted kidnap.
Police confirmed that Adam refused to cooperate during the investigation and court proceedings but eventually pleaded guilty at Swindon Crown Court on Tuesday, October 14.

Detective Constable Anna McCormack, from Swindon CID, praised the bravery of both the victim and the bystanders:
“This was a terrifying incident for the victim, and I would like to pay tribute to her for the strength she has shown throughout the process. I’d also like to thank the various members of the public who assisted her at the time — their intervention likely prevented a much worse outcome.”
Adam, who arrived illegally in the UK from Darfur, Sudan, in September 2023, had previously pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court to entering the country without valid documentation. He served seven months in prison for that offence before being released.
Judge James Townsend, presiding at Swindon Crown Court, ordered a pre-sentence report to assess Adam’s background before sentencing on December 12.
Court records revealed that Adam repeatedly refused to attend hearings, often declining to leave his prison cell at HM Prison Bullingdon, causing delays and multiple adjournments.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Dale Sheehan said:
“Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam preyed on a teenager walking home, putting her through a distressing ordeal after grabbing her from behind. The bravery of the public who intervened and recorded footage was instrumental in securing this conviction. Violence against women and girls will not be tolerated.”

A Home Office spokesperson also commented:
“When foreign nationals commit serious crimes in our country, we will always do everything in our power to deport them. This government deported almost 5,200 foreign national offenders in its first year in office, a 14% increase on the previous year.”
Adam remains in custody pending sentencing, while authorities review his immigration status and potential deportation.
