Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has urged Nigerians to turn the Godswill Akpabio Stadium into a fortress when the team takes on the Benin Republic in Tuesday’s decisive 2026 World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Eric Chelle’s rallying cry follows Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday, a result that revived the team’s qualification hopes.
“I’m proud of my players and I congratulate them. Since March, we’ve been under immense pressure because for Nigeria, qualifying for the World Cup is not optional. My players feel that every time they come to camp. But now, maybe it’s time for other teams to feel the same pressure too,” Chelle said after the win.
The Malian tactician urged fans to create an intimidating atmosphere in Uyo, stressing that the players would draw strength from their energy and passion. “We need our fans to be behind us and make it tough for Benin. This is the World Cup qualifier; the game starts the moment they step into our country. We must do the job on the pitch,” he added.
Nigeria’s win in Polokwane came through second-half goals from captain William Troost-Ekong and debutant Akor Adams, though a late slip from goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali allowed Lesotho a consolation strike, setting up a nervy finish.
The result pushed the Super Eagles to third place in Group C with 14 points, trailing South Africa by one and Benin Republic by three. To seal automatic qualification, Nigeria must beat Benin convincingly and hope South Africa fails to defeat Rwanda in Mbombela.
Elsewhere in the group, South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe in Durban, while Benin edged Rwanda 1-0, ensuring that the final round of fixtures will determine who advances.
Naija News confirmed that the Super Eagles’ planned arrival in Uyo on Saturday was delayed due to a fault with their chartered aircraft, forcing a brief schedule adjustment.
