Sony Pictures is teaming up with Mandalay Pictures for a new action movie called Archangel, and Jim Caviezel is taking the lead.
The film is set to hit theaters on November 6, 2026, according to a Monday announcement from the studios.
Caviezel, who became famous for playing Jesus in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, will star alongside Olivia Thirlby, Garret Dillahunt, and Shea Whigham.
The story comes from a script written by Chris Papasadero and Randall Wallace. Mandalay brought the project to Sony, with David Zelon and Peter Guber producing. Director Will Eubank, known for his work on Underwater and The Signal, is set to direct.
The casting marks another big move for Caviezel, who recently starred in Sound of Freedom, a movie that became a surprise box office success. Before that, he was the star of the long-running CBS show Person of Interest.
Earlier this year, Caviezel had hinted on the Arroyo Grande podcast that he was ready to play Jesus again in Mel Gibson’s upcoming sequel The Resurrection of the Christ. “I’m ready to return to the story that changed my life,” he said.
But plans seem to have shifted, as Finnish actor Ohtonen, 36, is now taking over the role. Ohtonen is best known for playing the warrior Wolland in Netflix’s The Last Kingdom.
With Archangel, Caviezel is swapping the divine for the dangerous, and Sony Pictures seems confident he can deliver another hit.
