Tuesday’s high-stakes Group C clash between Nigeria and Benin Republic will see both sides missing crucial players after suspensions ruled them out of the decisive World Cup qualifying encounter.

Benin head coach Gernot Rohr confirmed that midfielder Sessi d’Almeida and defender Yohan Roche will not feature in Uyo after picking up their second yellow cards in the Cheetahs’ 1-0 win over Rwanda last week.

Speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Rohr admitted the absences were significant but maintained his belief in his team’s ability to handle the challenge.

“We have lost two players because of a second yellow card,” Rohr said. “But all is possible for the three teams (South Africa, Benin and Nigeria). The decision is in our hands. This can be a little advantage. Big suspense until the end.”

Nigeria, meanwhile, will be without one of their brightest attacking threats, Ademola Lookman, who received his second yellow card of the qualifiers in the 64th minute of Friday’s 2-1 win over Lesotho. Under CAF’s disciplinary rules, the Atalanta forward will serve a one-match suspension.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle played down the impact of Lookman’s absence, insisting the team has enough quality to deliver when it matters most.

“The team remains focused and confident. Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have enough depth to compete effectively,” Chelle told reporters. “Every player must be mentally prepared to contribute, whether as a starter or substitute.”

He added that Lookman’s influence will still be felt within the camp, noting that the winger will continue to motivate his teammates from the sidelines as Nigeria aim to revive their qualification hopes.

The Super Eagles, who arrived in Uyo after a brief flight scare on Saturday, know that anything short of victory could seriously dent their chances of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Naija News reports that Nigeria currently sit third in Group C, trailing both Benin and South Africa.
