Matchday 8 of the 2025-2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) brought high drama, unexpected results, and fierce battles across the country.
From Owerri to Jos, the weekend produced shocks, late goals, and a controversial end as the NPFL title race began to take shape.
In Owerri, Kun Khalifat FC pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season, defeating record champions Enyimba 1-0 to end the People’s Elephant’s unbeaten run.
Ebuka Nwokorie curled home a stunning free kick in the 69th minute to hand the hosts a famous win at the Dan Anyiam Stadium. Enyimba’s task became tougher after midfielder Henry Ndedi was sent off just before halftime, forcing them to play the entire second half with ten men.
It was only Kun Khalifat’s second win of the campaign, but it came with enormous significance, as it dented Enyimba’s perfect start and dropped them to third place on 13 points. The Owerri side now sit 18th with eight points, a result that could spark their season to life.
In Katsina, defending champions Remo Stars continued their downward spiral with a 3-1 loss to Katsina United. Elijah Akanni opened the scoring for the hosts in the 31st minute before Abubakar Ibrahim levelled for Remo eight minutes later.
Katsina reclaimed the lead from the spot through Uche Collins just after the hour mark, and Abdulrahman Garba’s stoppage-time strike sealed a deserved victory.
The loss means Remo Stars have now suffered three defeats in four games, slipping to 12th with just ten points. Katsina United’s win lifted them to sixth on the log with 12 points from eight matches.
At the top of the table, Nasarawa United tightened their grip on first place with a 2-1 comeback win over Enugu Rangers in Lafia.
Wisdom Ebirim gave Rangers an early lead in the 19th minute, but Anas Yusuf converted a penalty to level before John Joshua’s second-half strike completed the turnaround. The Solid Miners are now unbeaten in five matches and lead the table with 19 points from eight games.
In Umuahia, Abia Warriors kept the pressure on Nasarawa United with a comfortable 2-0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors. Casmir Azubuike was the hero of the day, scoring twice within four minutes in the first half. The win keeps Abia Warriors second with 15 points, four adrift of the leaders.
At the Sani Abacha Stadium, Shooting Stars grabbed a last-gasp equaliser through Adams Mustapha to snatch a 1-1 draw against Kano Pillars. Mustapha Jibrin had earlier fired the hosts ahead in the ninth minute, but Pillars’ fans were left furious after conceding late.
The draw, however, was overshadowed by ugly scenes of fan violence that left players and officials shaken.
In Jos, Plateau United relieved some pressure with a 2-0 win over Barau FC. Amietimi Enewarikpemi and Vincent Temitope scored early in the second half to give Plateau a much-needed home victory.
In Bauchi, Wikki Tourists were held to a 1-1 draw by Kwara United. Jonathan Mairiga put the home side in front, but Toheeb Gidado equalised before halftime. Kwara goalkeeper Nurudeen Badmos earned the spotlight with a crucial double save from Abdullahi Usman’s penalty late in the game to keep the score level.
At the Onikan stadium in Lagos, Folarin Temitope’s early goal was enough to give Ikorodu City a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bendel Insurance, their second victory of the season.
Elsewhere, Warri Wolves and Niger Tornadoes shared the spoils in Ozoro. Israel Oladejo gave Wolves the lead before Terdoo Shemagande pounced on a goalkeeper’s mistake to draw Tornadoes level.
The Niger Delta derby between Rivers United and Bayelsa United was postponed to Monday morning after heavy rainfall made the pitch unplayable in Port Harcourt.
