As a student within the College of LSA here at the University of Michigan, the class options seem quite overwhelming! So, I’m here to give a few recommendations for classes I have taken and loved (that will also help you to fulfill your distribution requirements).
The first class that I would totally recommend is WGS 220: Perspectives in Women’s Health. This is an intro WGS course, and not only is it a prerequisite for other WGS courses, but it is also an incredible intro class to get you a great base of information for women’s health topics. This class goes over many different women’s health topics, such as menstrual cycles and pregnancy, as well as the inequities women face in the healthcare field! The readings are super interesting and keep you excited about what’s to come in lecture! This class also fills your Race and Ethnicity requirement for LSA!
The next class I recommend taking that will also fill your Upper-level Writing Requirement is WGS 400: Women’s Reproductive Health! I cannot express enough how much I loved this class! Though a big part of your grade is a paper you write, there is a lot of free choice when it comes to writing about what you are passionate about! This class was literally the reason I changed my career path to a Women’s Health-specific profession. Overall, a great way to fulfill your writing requirement while also learning more about Women in the healthcare system on a deeper level.
The last class I would recommend to everyone is WGS 330: Feminist Thought. Though this class is mostly geared toward WGS majors and minors, anyone can take it! This class is a seminar setting with mostly discussion-based classes that really take you through time to explore how Feminism was shaped and how we think of it today. I am currently in the course and feel so empowered during the discussions we have in class! The atmosphere is incredible, and my professor is amazing!
Overall, the WGS department courses here at U of M are incredible, so I definitely recommend that you give them a try!
