The rise of “BookTok” in recent years has sent many novels and authors skyrocketing in success, some of which include the works of Colleen Hoover and Emily Henry. Arguably one of the most, if not the most, successful and talented authors to come out of this era on social media is Taylor Jenkins Reid, whose stardom began after the 2017 release of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Reid then followed TSHOEH with back-to-back powerhouse novels such as Daisy Jones & The Six and Malibu Rising, bringing her triumphs even higher. Continuing to write and publish today, with her most recent novel Atmosphere having come out in June 2025, Reid is novelist royalty with several adaptations of her works already developed by major film studios, with even more on the way.

Reid has been my favorite author for years and continues to hold this reign today for her unimaginable creativity, unique and personalized writing style, and ability to design characters and storylines so life-like they could walk off the page. Reid is undoubtedly the queen of Young Adult historical fiction and contemporary novels, and there is no better way to recognize a queen than by pairing her with another, in this case being the queen of the music industry. This is all things Taylor.

Daisy Jones & The Six

A recent Amazon Prime adaptation, Daisy Jones & The Six follows the story of solo artist Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) growing up in the Los Angeles 60s and 70s music scene, before joining rising band The Six. When a romance starts to bud between Daisy and the married lead singer of The Six, Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin), the band slowly begins to fall apart, all told through their record-breaking album Aurora. This novel is an incredible tale of the 70s rock ‘n roll era of music, while also giving caution to the presence of temptations and unreliable narrators. Written in such a unique style, Reid brings to life an entire world along with the band, carrying beautiful disasters from page to page.

Malibu rising

Malibu Rising focuses on the Riva Siblings: Nina, Jay, Hud, and Kit. In a constant back-and-forth timeline between a single day and years of their childhood, the Riva siblings navigate life with an absent father and a struggling mother, all while learning to cope through the Malibu waves. Through heartbreaks and betrayals, Malibu Rising captivated me across countless reads and is the perfect summer read filled with drama, lust, and love.

Taylor Swift Song: After everything that Nina goes through, the only answer is “Mirrorball.”

CARRIE SOTO IS BACK

My most recent summer re-read, Carrie Soto Is Back follows legendary tennis player Carrie Soto in a dual timeline, one in which she dominates women’s tennis from childhood up until her retirement from the game as an adult, and the second in which she steps out of retirement in order to reclaim her title of the most Grand Slams and greatest tennis player of all time. Carrie is an incredibly driven woman with an unfiltered and brutally honest mouth, uncaring as to what she has to do to get to the top. It is an unbelievably fun read and has made me come to not only love tennis but also appreciate the beauty of such a tough sport.

The seven husbands of evelyn hugo

Evelyn Hugo is an iconic actress of the Hollywood Golden Days with a big reputation. When she offers a surprise, exclusive interview to Monique Grant, we are thrown into the life of young Evelyn, chasing her dreams of the silver screen as she works her way up the industry. Splitting her life into seven parts, each for one of her husbands, Monique finds it isn’t as glamorous as it appears. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is as enchanting as it is heartbreaking, and Evelyn and Harry’s friendships will always hold a close spot in my heart.

Taylor Swift Song: Personally, I think TSHOEH is more Lana Del Rey coded, but if she were a Taylor song, she would be “The Lucky One.”

One true loves

Another recent film adaptation, One True Loves, is the story of Emma Blair (Phillipa Soo) and Jesse Lerner (Luke Bracey), rebellious, thrill-seeking high school sweethearts trying to escape their small Massachusetts hometown. When Jesse goes missing in a helicopter accident, Emma moves back to her hometown in search of a new life. She runs into Sam (Simu Liu), her childhood friend, who never left town. Now years after Jesse is legally pronounced dead, Emma finds herself falling in love again, this time with Sam, living a life she swore she never would want. When Jesse is finally rescued and brought home, Emma must navigate love, loss, and how people change in the face of tragedy.
