Warner Bros. Animation is bringing one of the most famous Batman stories to the screen. Variety reports that a multi-part animated adaptation of Batman: Knightfall is now in production.

The first part of the adaptation is set to premiere in 2026, though the exact release date has not yet been announced.

The news was revealed at New York Comic-Con during the Warner Bros. Animation panel, The Art Knight: Batman in Animation. The story is based on the 1993–1994 comic arc of the same name, which ran as a trilogy consisting of Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd.

The original comics were created by Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, Dennis O’Neil, Peter David, Jo Duffy, Jim Aparo, Graham Nolan, Norm Breyfogle, and Jim Balent. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest Batman stories ever told.

According to the official logline, “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

The animated film will be directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams. Rick Morales will serve as supervising producer, alongside producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau. Executive producers include Sam Register and Michael Uslan.

While Knightfall has influenced many Batman adaptations over the years, including The Dark Knight Rises, this will be the first time the full story is directly adapted for the screen.

The story follows Bruce Wayne as he faces the super-steroid-enhanced villain Bane, who systematically wears him down. After being physically and mentally broken, Bruce is replaced as Batman by Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael. Azrael grows increasingly violent, harming Batman’s reputation, until Bruce recovers through paranormal means and reclaims his role as Gotham’s protector.

Knightfall had lasting effects on the Batman universe. Bruce’s trust with the police, the public, and other heroes had to be rebuilt because of Azrael’s actions.

The story also highlights the danger of Bruce working alone, leading to the creation of the modern Batman Family. Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce’s loyal butler, temporarily resigns during this storyline.

The original comic took over a year to complete and has been reprinted multiple times. However, some parts, like Knightquest: The Search, were not fully collected until 2017 in the second omnibus edition.
