James Gunn, producer of the DC Universe films, has shared new details about the upcoming Supergirl movie.
The film is based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, and Milly Alcock stars in the lead role.
Other cast members include Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. Gunn is producing the movie alongside Peter Safran, with Craig Gillespie directing and Ana Nogueira writing the script.
The story follows Supergirl as she celebrates her 21st birthday. She travels across the galaxy with her dog Krypto and meets a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll. A tragedy sets her on a path of revenge, turning the film into a “murderous quest” for justice.
Supergirl is part of the new DCU slate called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which Gunn and Safran unveiled in January 2023.
The movie is adapted from the comic miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Gunn described the project as “a big science fiction epic film” and promised a more intense, “hardcore” version of Kara Zor-El than fans have seen before.
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Gunn compared the film’s tone to one of his biggest hits. “Supergirl especially is a space adventure. It’s like Guardians,” he said, referring to Guardians of the Galaxy.
He added that while the story fits into the larger DC Universe, it also stands on its own: “Lanterns is its own thing. There’s just a longer, sort of a bigger world we’re building with all these different pieces and they do all come together and intersect sometimes in a story fashion and sometimes just in a, you know, ‘here’s another piece of the world’ fashion.”
Gunn previously confirmed that the movie will follow a traditional three-act structure rather than the comic book format, though it will retain the main characters and themes from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The announcement of the film already caused a surge in interest for the comic, with copies selling out quickly online and in stores. Gunn said he is working with DC Comics publisher Jim Lee to ensure more copies are printed soon.
It looks like Supergirl fans have a big, action-packed space adventure to look forward to. What do you think about this new take on Supergirl? Share your thoughts in the comments.
